KICKIN OFF 2008 WITH A BANG

First Whale Sightings

March 29th and March 30th, 2008, the Cape May Whale Watcher spotted 3 Finback Whales in the mouth of the Delaware Bay. About 11 miles south of Cape May Inlet, the Cape May Whale Watcher crew with Capt. Jeff Stewart Sr, Capt Jeff Stewart Jr, Capt. David Githens, Chief Egineer Scott, Heather, and Leeann aboard with a fine crowd for a chilly late March day. They ran along the Cape May beach front, but this time of year dolphins are non-existant due to the temperature of the water being well below their 55 degree threshhold.

They had heard of quite a bit of activity at the mouth of the Bay for the last month, and they were quite happy to investigate. Once on scene, the vessel slowed and then the spouts became visible a half mile out. The vessel cautiously approached and then the passengers could appreciate the true size of these amazing creatures. The Finback whale is the second largest mammal on the planet, only to the Blue Whale. It is not uncommon to see Finback whales around Cape May. Often, there will be mixed groups of whales, both Finback and Humpback. The Humpbacks are more playful, but the Finback is very impressive if only for its sheer size, and awesome displays of speed and maneuverability.

A massive amount of bait in the area suggests the whales will stay in the area for a bit longer. The cooler temps will help this. However, storm activity in the upcoming week may alter the patterns of the bait and in turn the whales, so like anything its not a perfect guarantee. However, the Cape May Whale Watcher does guarantee marine mammals, so if they do not show you anything, you are given a free pass which never expires.

The Cape May Whale Watcher is sailing every weekend at 1PM for a 3 Hour Whale and Dolphin Watch. Come on down to the Cape now and take advantage of these perfect whale conditions. It could change tomorrow.
